New daily record for dublinbikes – over 7k journeys taken in one day

dublinbikes has just announced a new daily record for journeys taken. dublinbikes’ members took 7,052 journeys on Thursday 13th October, marking another milestone in dublinbikes’ incredible success.

Remarkably, Wednesday 12th October had also been a record day with 6,807 journeys taken, surpassing the previous record of 6,280 journeys on 13th July, 2011.

dublinbikes is a public bike hire scheme run by JCDecaux Ireland on behalf of Dublin City Council. Over 2.6 million dublinbikes journeys have been taken since the scheme was launched on 13th September 2009. dublinbikes has attracted over 63,000 members – about two thirds of whom have taken Long Term (one-year) membership.

Dublin’s Lord Mayor Andrew Montague proposed the dublinbikes scheme. He says “dublinbikes continues to go from success to success. There are now 550 bikes in the scheme operating from 44 stations. This means each bike was used on average almost 13 times on 13th October. It also shows once again the demand for the scheme and for cycling in the city. When we first launched the schem there was a lot of worry that it did not work. dublimbikes is now one of the most successful schemes in the world and we are palnning to increase the number of bikes from 500 to 5,000 in the next five years”.
