Details of high-profile Dublin City cycling routes soon to be made public

A large number of high-profile planned cycling routes in Dublin City are now due to reach public consultation within the next six months.

The list of cycling projects was released by Dublin City Council to IrishCycle.com after a request was made for the document under Freedom of Infromation legisation.

What is likely the most high-profile route planned, the Liffey or quays cycle route from the Phoenix Park to The Point is now expected to reach public consultation in the first quarter of 2015.

Although all of the dates given in the document are only a rough guide — some projects on the list with without any timelines attached to them used to have set dates but are now left in waiting.

Main off-road routes: Yellow = Grand Canal; Red = Quays / Liffey route; Green = Dodder Greenway; Shades of blue: Royal Canal greenway; Brown = Clontarf to City Centre; Purple = S2S north at Bull Island

As we reported yesterday, the missing section of the Sutton to Sandycove (S2S) route at Dollymount and Bull Island is now expected to be started “early in the new year”. Options are also being developed for an off-road routes along the streets between Clontarf to City Centre, with plans to be published early next year.

The Canal Way route covers the Grand Canal on the southside and the Royal Canal on the northside. An 8km section of the Grand Canal route from Blackhorse to Portobello will link the canal routes at both ends — in the east, there’s the busy mainly off-road route between Portobello and the north Docklands which carries thousands of people cycling a day, and, in the west, the greenway from Blackhorse to Adamstown famed for its obstructive “kissing gates”. Public consultation on bridging the gap is expected in the first few months of 2015, with construction possibly starting later in the year.

On the northside, the Canal Way upgrade is split into three sections: Sheriff Street to North Strand Road; North Strand Road to Phibsborough Road; and Royal Canal Phibsborough Road to Ashtown. The first two are due to reach planning stages by the end of the year, while the latter is to go to planning in the first quarter of next year.

Primary on-road route options are also to be developed to the planning stage including Clonskeagh to O’Connell Bridge (Q2 2015) and Merrion Gates to Talbot Memorial Bridged (undefined date in 2015).

We have also recently reported extensively on the River Dodder Greenway plans, which isbeing managed by South Dublin County Council.
