New two-way cycle path for the Phoenix Park

A new two-way cycle path is to be constructed on the Wellington Road in the Phoenix Park, with work starting from tomorrow.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) said: “Upon completion of the works, the Wellington Road will be one-way in the direction of Islandbridge Gate, as currently 95% of all traffic on this road is travelling south and exiting Islandbridge Gate.”

The OPW said that the planned works meet the objectives of the Phoenix Park Conservation Management Plan.

Wellington Road will be closed to all traffic from tomorrow, Monday November 28, for a period of 6 weeks to accommodate road repairs and cycle route installation. The OPW said that all road users should note that Military Road will be temporarily opened during this period.

  1. OPW response:

I have received your query back from Park management who have confirmed that on completion of the road works Islandbridge Gate will be exit only for both vehicles and bicycles.
As a result only pedestrians would be permitted to enter in Islandbridge Gate.
Cyclists would be required to dismount from their bike and walk in through the gate with their bike.
