Naas will be safer says group after cllrs narrowly approve project

— “This is for the safety of our children getting to school” says local groups.

Councillors in Naas have narrowly approved a cycle route on the Dublin Road in the town and part-pedestrianisation of Naas’s Poplar Square. The project includes pedestrian and cycling improvements, including cycle paths and new pedestrian crossings.

This isn’t the first time councillors in the Kildare municipal district of Naas have approved the project, it was already approved in May 2016, as we reported at the time. The new vote was pushed by Cllr Darren Scully (Fine Gael) who claimed nobody is opposed to cycle lanes while he was trying to get the Dublin Road cycle route project unapproved.

According to the leinsterleader.ie, there was “heated exchanges” as councillors voted by five votes to four to approve the project. It said Naas mayor Cllr Fintan Brett (Fine Gael) used his vote to push the project over the line.

The move was welcomed by Naas Neighborhood Greenway. On Facebook, the group said: “Well done to the councillors who supported this project. This is for the safety of our children getting to school. Well done we appreciate it.”

As we reported at the start of the month, Cllr Scully and others are also fighting against a cycle route on the Kilcullen Road in Naas.
