Man killed in collision between car and bicycle in Waterford

A man in his 40s died at around 7am this morning in a collision between his bicycle and a car on the Dunmore Road at Kilcop, Co Waterford. The status of the car driver was not published.

It is the 15th time so-far this year that a fatal road traffic victim was cycling a bicycle at the time of a collision with a motorist.

Tony Connaughton of the Garda press office said: “The collision between a car and a cyclist occurred at approximately 7am. The cyclist, a man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been removed to University Hospital Waterford.”

The collision is understood to have happened near the Jaybees shop and filling station on the R684 road between Waterford City and Dunmore East. Connaughton added: “This stretch of road is currently closed pending an examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.”

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Waterford Garda Station on 051-305300, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.

  1. Another Victim the 16th,this time on a lonely Country Road , on a cold dark morning before daylight presumably someone going to work. Again we dont know what happened or have a picture of the road. My condolences to the mans family RIP.

    We need loads of signs especially on these Rural roads to warn Motorists To expect Cyclists at any time of the day or night and to slow down .

  3. This is just so sad for the man’s family. Another impact that should not have happened with the #VisionZero approach to road safety for people who cycle. However we are locked into our authorities adopting the victim-blaming approach so that they can ,maintain free-flow of traffic at all costs. Simply because people who chose to cycle don’t actually count when the windscreen-view of road safety dominates thinking.
