19-year-old killed in bicycle and truck collision on N11

A 19-year-old man was killed in Dublin this afternoon in a collision between the bicycle he was cycling and a driver of a truck.

“Gardai in Donnybrook are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the N11 at the junction with Greenfield Park at approximately 3.15pm this afternoon,” said Tony Connaughton of the Garda press office.

“A 19-year-old male cyclist was fatally injured when he was involved in a collision with a truck. He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the truck was uninjured.”

He added: “The scene of the collision was closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and has since reopened.”

Witnesses to the collision are asked to contact Donnybrook Garda Station on 01 6669200, the Garda Confidential telephone line or any garda station.

  1. Whilst I don’t have any knowledge of this particular crash, I have repeatedly posted videos on Twitter of dangerous driver behavior at this very junction.

He was only 19. This is horrible. We need a change from the toxic car-centric society we live in. We need safe segregated cycle lanes. We need to redesign junctions. We need cameras at all major junctions like this.

  2. RIP – my heart goes out to his family and friends.

Without comment on this case, the cycle lanes that drop you onto the road inside left turning traffic are dangerous and one of the reasons I avoid using cycle lanes in Dublin.

  3. A truly appalling vista for his family. And all so avoidable. Road authorities and traffic law enforcers are failing people who cycle.

  4. The needless deaths of cyclists on our roads has to stop. I drove out this road on tuesday from the city centre and was thanking my stars that as a cyclist I don’t live in Dublin any more because of all the very close calls I saw on my drive. 1.5M has to be implemented as does the laws against parking in cycle lanes. Drivers have to have patience on the roads with other road users. As a country cyclist I say there go I but for the grace of God because the amount of motorists who fly out of junctions and gate ways is appalling. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
