Listening sessions to reflect on women’s Dublin cycling experience

Women who cycle in Dublin are invited to ‘listening sessions’ this Sunday covering the issue of street harassment of women who cycle.

The two sessions — this Sunday August 12 at 12.30 midday and 1.30pm — are being run by the Dublin Cycling Campaign, as part of research supported by the Community Foundation.

...I'm sorry to disrupt you while you're reading this article, but without messages like this, IrishCycle.com's reader-funded journalism won't survive. With nearly 1/2 million views and 300k readers so-far this year, it's not just people who are dedicated to cycling that this website reaches. However, the number of subscribers is around 0.6% of readers. While having a large gap between readers/subscribers is standard for non-paywall reader-supported journalism, IrishCycle's journalism needs more support. Don't delay, support monthly or yearly today. Now, back to the article...

The campaign wrote on Facebook: “If you’re a woman who cycles in Dublin, we’re organising this event as part of our research into street harassment. This stage of the research is women-only, please consider getting involved and helping us to figure out why only 30% of people who cycle in Dublin are women. Free tickets available here, 12th of August. There will be cake!”

It said the sessions will gathering ideas which will help to frame the research.

The group said that they have organised the events to follow the Liffey Cycle, a protest cycle along the quays organised by Dublin Cycling Campaign which starts that morning at Grand Canal Dock at 11am, but that those not taking part in that cycle are also welcome.

The campaign said that at a later stage they will be inviting men to share their experiences of cycling in Dublin, but the event on August 12 will be women-only.

...That's the end of the article. Keep scrolling if you want to the comments, but IrishCycle.com *NEEDS* readers like you to keep it that way. It only requires a small percentage of readers to give a bit each month or every year to keep IrishCycle.com's journalism open to all. Thank you.

  1. would loved to have come, but was away and only heard about it afterwards. I bet men don’t have to put up with comments such as ” I wish I was the saddle” , “I really love your body” and I could go on and on…I suggest, ladies, filling a water bottle with pee (your own is best) and spraying offenders…never done it, but often thought of it – far too late, of course.
