Man on bicycle killed in Galway hit and run (updated)

Garda are seeking a blue BMW with a partial registration of “01 G” after John White, a man described as a cyclist in his late 60s, was killed in Co Galway last night.

The fatal traffic collision occurred at about 8.30pm near pedestrian lights on the Gort Road in Loughrea, Co Galway.

Gardai have said this morning that they are continuing to investigate yesterday evenings fatal hit and run collision at Loughrea and that they suspect that the front of the car would have visual damage.

“The offending car, which is believed to have been a blue BMW with a partial registration of 01, would have visible damage to the bonnet and front. It is also believed that the car has a defective right rear light,” said Sergeant James Molloy, based at the Garda press office.

Anyone with information or anyone who sees a vehicle matching the description is asked to contact Loughrea Garda Station at 091 842870.

“The injured cyclist was taken to University College Hospital Galway where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2am. A post mortem examination will be held later today,” said Sergeant Molloy in the original statement issued earlier this morning.

A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out on the deceased at 2pm today by the State Pathologist, Prof Marie Cassidy.

The road at the scene of the crash has reopened after it was closed to facilitate a Garda Forensic Collision Examination of the area.

  1. Very sad to hear this news ,I hope they get the perpetrator soon. I also hope we get to hear the details of what actually happened and there are plenty of witnesses to make sure no lies are told so that the guilty party does not get a watered down sentence if they are indeed totally guilty.
