Cyclist dies outside Ballyhaunis in collision with motorist

A man in his late 40s who was cycling has died in a fatal road traffic collision with a motorist in Mayo this morning.

Gardai in Swinford are seeking witnesses to the collision which involved a car and a bicycle.

The incident occurred today, May 17, at 11.45am on the Ballaghadreen Road, Classaghroe. The location is described as “a mile outside Ballyhaunis”.

“The man was pronounced dead at the scene has been removed to the morgue in Castlebar where a post mortem examination is due to take place. The driver of the car was taken to Mayo General with non-life threatening injuries,” said Gerry Kavanagh of the Garda press office, in a statement issued at 3.27pm.

The statement said that the road is currently closed for forensic collision investigations.

  1. I’ve collided with a few things in my “career”, The kerb, a pot-hole, things like that. Mercifully I have neither caused nor suffered injury. In general cyclists “colliding with a motorist” cause little damage. On the other hand, a vehicle colliding with a cyclist can be fatal. Why do we persist in blaming the cyclist, and commenting on ine “injuries” caused to the driver?
