Woman on bicycle killed in Limerick collision with truck

A woman on a bicycle was killed in a collision with a truck at rush hour this morning in Limerick.

“The collision involving an articulated truck and a cyclist happened at the junction of Rutland Street, Fr. Matthew Bridge and Charlotte’s Quay at 7.30 am,” said James Molloy at the Garda press office.

He added: “The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body has been removed to the Mid Western Regional Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place.”

Gardai say that the roadway in the area, which is close to The Hunt Museum, is closed and diversions are in place.

  1. So sad to learn of this particularly as I have just returned from attending at the Dublin Coroner’s Court inquest into the death of Louise Butler last August after impact with a semi-trailer HGV on Frescati Road, Blackrock in DLR CoCo area.
These impacts should not be happening – they are entirely avoidable.
I returned a week ago from a 7 day cycle tour of Charente-Maritime-Cognac region of France and there the wheat/barley harvest was in full swing so we were subjected to some dangerous overtaking at speed with a lot of bulk-tankers rushing from fields to silos – the wind buffeting we were subjdexcted to was totally unacceptable. HGV drivers need to adopt a new overtaking strategy for vulnerable road users in traffic.
Reduce you speed and move out at least 1.5 m before overtaking cyclists and stop cutting in front of us at village-town gateway traffic-calming devices.
