DublinBikes reaches 50k users, pedalling 15,000 trips in one day

4691144338_43ce7c26d9_bDublinBikes has reached new records with 50,000 signed up for annual memberships as of today and October 2 was the busiest ever day with members taking over 15,000 journeys.

A new expansion has seen the numbers of bikes rise to 1,500 and the number of stations more than double to 100.

...I'm sorry to disrupt you while you're reading this article, but without messages like this, IrishCycle.com's reader-funded journalism won't survive. With nearly 1/2 million views and 300k readers so-far this year, it's not just people who are dedicated to cycling that this website reaches. However, the number of subscribers is around 0.6% of readers. While having a large gap between readers/subscribers is standard for non-paywall reader-supported journalism, IrishCycle's journalism needs more support. Don't delay, support monthly or yearly today. Now, back to the article...

Philip Maguire, assistant chief executive with Dublin City Council’s planning and development department said: “The success of the Coca-Cola Zero dublinbikes scheme continues to exceed all expectations. October 2nd was the busiest usage day ever with 15,441 journeys made and we are now seeing more and more cyclists in the capital.”

Maguire added: “The availability of the additional bikes and stations has made the city more accessible and it’s great to see so many people using our bikes and their own bikes as a quick and healthy way to get around the city.”

The system is run by JCDecaux, who run similar schemes in Paris and other cities.

Joanne Grant, managing director of JCDecaux Ireland added “Reaching this milestone of 50,000 subscribers in Dublin demonstrates the overwhelming success of our business model. Membership has increased by 40% from this time last year and we fully expect that the number of members will continue to rise.”

...That's the end of the article. Keep scrolling if you want to the comments, but IrishCycle.com *NEEDS* readers like you to keep it that way. It only requires a small percentage of readers to give a bit each month or every year to keep IrishCycle.com's journalism open to all. Thank you.

  1. While the bike scheme is phenomenal lets not forget that we still need a better infrastructure. Continued success to the bike scheme.

  2. Delighted to see it. Recently joined and it is fantastic. Could do with a few more bike racks between the Georges – Stephen’s Green area, it can be a struggle to find a free rack against the clock, but I’m sure it is on the cards. :)
