Castlebar to Turlough greenway to open this Friday

A new 8km greenway is set to open officially between Castlebar to Turlough in Co Mayo this Friday, May 1.

The walking and cycling route (pictured above and below) will link the county town from its town park at Springfield to the National Museum of Ireland Country Life at Turlough. It mostly travels along the Castlebar River.

The opening of the greenway coincides with a new cycling-themed exhibition at the museum, “Cycling the Country” which set out to showcase of traditional cycling in Ireland’s countryside.

Co Mayo is famous for its 42km Great Western Greenway, between Westport, Newport, Mulranny and Achill. But the western county will have to hurry to joint up its planned network of greenways as the Deise Greenway in Co Waterford is expected expand to 48km by next spring.

Mayo’s long-term greenway plan is to have a county-side network, include links between Westport, Castlebar, Foxford, Ballina, and Killala. As we reported recently, parts of the greenway between Ballina and Killala are under construction.

  1. If it were connected to nearby Swinford and Mayo county council listened to the people of the county who made submissions on the county plan, a greenway could be put on the closed railway line from Swinford to Charlestown and on to Sligo and south on the closed railway line to claremorris and Athenry. Pretty blindingly obvious opportunity.

  2. Hope Mayo County Council listen to you, I had hoped Kerry County Council would have sense to provide a CIE station at Farrenfore for Kerry International Airport, joined up thinking!

  3. The Castlebar greenway actually starts at lough Lannagh and is linked from there to the Westport Greenway also. Lovely cycle and walking lanes around the lake that brings you all the way to the museum in Turlough. Rented some bikes from bikes and boards last summer.
