Gardai seeking witnesses after 71-year-old man who was cycling dies

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a 71-year-old man who had been cycling came off his bicycle and died shortly afterwards.

The collision happened on the Castletownbere to Ardgroom road in Co Cork this evening at around 4.40pm.

When asked if it was a single-vehicle collision, Sergeant Brian Whelan at the Garda press office said: “At this stage we believe only one [vehicle was] involved”. However, witnesses to the collision are asked to contact Castletownbere Garda Station on 027 70002, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Sergeant Whelan said: “A male pedal cyclist 71 years, was out cycling with a group of colleagues when he came off his bicycle and struck the ground. His colleagues administered CPR, until a local Doctor attended the scene. The doctor pronounced the man dead a short time later and his body has been taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out. No one else was injured.”

He added that the road was closed to facilitate a Garda Forensic Collision examination and has now reopened.

  1. Report doesn’t make it clear was it a RTC (hit by a motorised vehicle) or did the rider have a mishap and just fall off?

  2. As per the quote from Sergeant Brian Whelan at the Garda press office: “At this stage we believe only one [vehicle was] involved”.

The bit in square brackets was just added to many it as clear as possable at this stage — from the Gardai’s point of view, info is understandable limited at this point as not to influence wittinesses etc.
