Man on bicycle killed in collision with van driver in Co Donegal

Gardai have said this morning that they are investigating a fatal road traffic collision at Moneydarragh, Gleneely, Co Donegal involving a van driver and two bicycles. A second man who was cycling was brought to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The incident happened on the Redcastle to Gleneely road at about 9.15am today, October 17, 2015.

Garda Sergeant James Molloy said: “A cyclist in his 40s was fatally injured in a collision with a van. A second cyclist injured in the incident was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening. The driver of the van was not injured.”

He added: “The road at the scene remains closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.”

  1. Truly dreadful news but note the same tired old Garda mantra: “A cyclist in his 40s was fatally injured in a collision with a van. A second cyclist injured in the incident was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening. The driver of the van was not injured.”

“The road at the scene remains closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.”

Since cyclists are not in the habit of throwing themselves willy-nilly at motorised vehicles could Garda please change the tenor of the mantra to: “A cyclist was fatally injured after a motorised vehicle impacted with him ……” And we don’t expect the driver ever to be injured because he/she is ensconced inside a metal box with seat-belt and air-bag protection!

The ‘windscreen-view’ of road safety prevails.

  2. I expect the Guards need to be careful with public announcements, if there is a prosecution to follow. I don’t envy their job here.

Deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the man killed here.
