CPOs for Kerry greenway delayed again, but still promised

Kerry County Council are asking An Bord Pleanala to determine if an Environmental Impact Statement is required for the South Kerry Greenway but the council has again put off starting the formal compulsory purchase order (CPO) process.

The South Kerry Greenway is planned on the Ring of Kerry between Glenbeigh and Renard via Caherciveen. The route is partly along an abandoned railway line.

Yesterday, Radio Kerry reported that the council asked the planning board about the need for an impact statment and the radio station said that “The CPO and planning application will be submitted separately to An Bord Pleanala over the coming months.”

This represents the second delay as the council previously said it would start the formal CPO by January 2017 and before that they said they’d start the process by the end of last year. Farmers have opposed the use of compulsory purchase.

  1. Anti-CPO signs all over the place in this area. Supposedly claiming to be pro-greenway also, though that may be a sop to those who realize and argue in favour of the touristic benefits of a greenway to a region that is very dependent on tourism. Another lengthy row in the making. It seems that greenways can only go ahead if there is absolutely no impact on anyone anywhere. Even then someone generally seems to find fault and object.
