Man in his 40s dies in bicycle/car collision in Dublin last night

A man in his 40s who was cycling on Patrick Street in Dublin died after he was involved in a collision with a driver of a car in the early hours of this morning.

It is the second cycling death in Dublin City this year after a man in his 20s was killed two weeks ago on Conyngham Road, near the Phoenix Park Islandbridge gatehouse.

James Molloy of the Garda press office said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision. A cyclist has died following a traffic collision on Patrick Street, Dublin 8 at 12.44am on Friday morning 24th March 2017. The cyclist, a man in his 40s, was involved in a collision with a car. He was removed by ambulance to St James’ Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the car was not injured.”

He added: “A Garda investigation has begun into the crash and the scene of the incident was closed to facilitate an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The road at the scene has now re-opened to traffic.”

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Kevin Street Garda Station on 01 666 9400.

  1. The Irish Times reporting on this was bizarre. They had a version of the story saying that the cyclist was killed when HE collided with the car & car driver was uninjured, without any further explanation of why they were putting the blame on the cyclist. They have changed the wording in the last hour. For the liberal leaning newspaper in Ireland the Irish Times has a strange attitude towards cyclists, which can be seen in the regular outbursts they publish in their letter pages.

  2. I half expect that if a person on a bike is killed by someone hitting them with a car whilst they were cycling on a cycle-track, that it’ll be reported that the cause of the death was the cycle-track, and that we need to get rid of all cycle-tracks before anyone else is killed on them.

  3. I would have thought it was Illegal to speculate on a Crash just after it happened and the investigation was just beginning by the Gardai. This is Guilty before Trial which is Illegal. I always have thought the Irish Times was pro Motorist and this proves it.
