Damian Hogan at the Garda press office said: “Gardaí at Terenure in Dublin are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision which occurred at the junction of Harold’s Cross Road and Grove Road at approximately 3.55pm today.”

He added: “A male pedal cyclist was struck by a lorry at the above location. The cyclist was taken by ambulance to St James Hospital where his injuries are described as serious.”

  1. I’m guessing if he was wearing a plastic bike hat, then it was feck all use to him :( It would also be good to know if he was wearing HiViz. The last person to be killed by a truck was wearing both a plastic bike hat and HiViz. Time for the Gards to cop-on and stop with proposing utterly worthless ‘solutions’ to the problem of dangerous driving.

It’s like what they proposed recently in London – heavy car-pollution in the air so people were advised to stay indoors. Utterly bizarre reaction to a serious problem.

  2. I wish the Garda Press Office would cease giving worthless information about these unacceptable collisions using a term such as ‘lorry’ to describe the vehicle that impacted with the rider. There are many different types of goods vehicle ranging from a panel van to a rigid 2-5 axle HGV to a semi-trailer HGV.
We know that 3-5 axle rigs rigid/trailer have a fatal flaw in the cab design to please tell us the nature of the rig involved in this and every RTC. Tell us if the rider was wearing hi-vis or a plastic flower pot.
We have a right to know basic details.

  3. Sad to say I cycled onto the scene of this very soon after it happened. He was wearing a helmet but I don’t think he had a high vis vest. The truck was a rigid but I’m afraid I couldn’t tell you what size. It was reasonably large.

It looked like the truck and the cyclist were both travelling along the canal out of the city along Grove road. The truck went to turn left up Harold’s Cross road.

I don’t mind telling you that it was extremely harrowing to see the aftermath. Perhaps selfishly, I couldn’t help but think that I cycle that way every morning to work.

I know I’m not the only one but I must have 3 or 4 close calls everyday along the canal. Some examples being trucks passing way too close, people pulling out of junctions and motorists encroaching into the cycle lane to pass cars turning right. Of course, I won’t claim to be an angel. I’ve had close calls due to my own stupidity as well.

My point is, these collisions are going to keep happening. Too many have occurred in the past few weeks already. People are dying and getting seriously injured. Fundamental change needs to happen. What that change is, I don’t know, but serious dialogue needs to happen now. Stupid recommendations like compulsory helmet and high vis are not helpful.

    Apologies, rant over.

  4. I passed by when the emergency services were at work. There was a white rigid truck parked at the scene. Can’t recall if it was a 2 or 3 axle.
