Cargo bicycle event back in Phoenix Park for 5th year

Logistical support from the Office of Public Works means that the Irish Cargo Bike Championships is to return to the Phoenix Park on Sunday June 18, the last day of Bike Week 2017.

The family-focused event is centred on a team-based cargo bike cycling competition. It includes testing skill of load, child carrying capacity, manoeuvrability, balance, and some short sprints and relay races.

We had reported that a lack of funding could have stopped the event from taking place this year, but, while the event is now firmly going ahead, the organisers are still looking for a title sponsor to make the event as best as it can be.

The organisers are bicycle shops who sell cargo bikes, so, the event also looks to showcase some of the main types of cargo bikes on sale in Dublin.

Organisers estimate that there is now between 100 and 150 cargo bicycles in use in Ireland — individual owners of the bikes use them for carrying children and a number of businesses use them for deliveries.

If you want to enter a team into the Cargo Bike Championship you can register via eventbrite.ie — you can do so without having a cargo bike of your own.

National Bike Week is due to run from June 10 to 18, see bikeweek.ie for details.
