Parking on cycle path at 3Arena not approved by council or Garda Traffic Corps

Coach parking on the footpath and cycle path outside the 3Arena and along East Wall Road was not approved by Dublin City Council or the Garda Divisional Traffic Corps and Event Management Office.

The images, taken by a reader, were taken on May 30, when singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes was performing at the 3Arena.

...I'm sorry to disrupt you while you're reading this article, but without messages like this, IrishCycle.com's reader-funded journalism won't survive. With nearly 1/2 million views and 300k readers so-far this year, it's not just people who are dedicated to cycling that this website reaches. However, the number of subscribers is around 0.6% of readers. While having a large gap between readers/subscribers is standard for non-paywall reader-supported journalism, IrishCycle's journalism needs more support. Don't delay, support monthly or yearly today. Now, back to the article...

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said: “Dublin City Council did not give permission for coaches to park on the footpath and cycle path at DB Stop 7399, on East Wall Road. The cycle path (faint red line below the star) is on the footpath at this location, separate to the carriageway.”

The council added: “We allow coaches to ‘Set Down Only and Pick Up Only. No Standing time allowed. Note: Should any Traffic Management issues arise approval may be rescinded at any time’, at DB Stop 7399, on East Wall Road. For Concerts we allow coaches to ‘Set Down Only’ and ‘Pick Up Only’ on North Wall Quay.”

Sergeant Margaret Flanagan of the Garda press office said: “Please be advised no permissions have been issued by the Divisional Traffic Corps & Event Management Office in relation to the parking of coaches at the 3 Arena.”

Flanagan added: “The only coach parking available for the 3 Arena is in designated spaces on North Wall Quay and within Private Parking area at Topaz Dublin Port. The opposite end of Eastwall Road & Alfie Byrne Road have been used and advertised on the Garda Website for coach parking in the past in relation to concerts at Croke Park.”

As we reported last year, the segregated cycle route on the Alfie Byrne Road were “suspended” for Bruce Springsteen’s Croke Park concerts.

...That's the end of the article. Keep scrolling if you want to the comments, but IrishCycle.com *NEEDS* readers like you to keep it that way. It only requires a small percentage of readers to give a bit each month or every year to keep IrishCycle.com's journalism open to all. Thank you.

  1. These coach drivers are doing extreme damage to the pavement structure: footpath and cycle track pavements are constructed a lot thinner than roads and so are very easily destroyed by large commercial vehicles. What we will end up with here is an uneven and potholed cycle track than will never be resurfaced like all the other damaged cycle tracks in the city. Does anybody know of a cycle track that has ever been resurfaced? Anyway good to be highlighting this illegal parking – cyclists need to protect what little they’ve got! Did the photographer not think of calling the police to at least ticket the vehicles?

  2. Have the Corpo or the Gardaí given permission for the end of road works sign to block the same cycle lane, as illustrated in the final photograph?
