Man on bicycle killed after collision with car driver in Rathfarnham

A man in his 50s was pronounced dead last night as a result of injuries sustained in a collision involving his bicycle and a motorist driving a car yesterday morning at 8.10am in Rathfarnham.

The collision happened at Butterfield Park, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14 and it is the 10th death of a person of a bicycle so-far this year, not including another collision which was reclassified as a person on foot with a bicycle.

Damian Hogan of the Garda press office said: “The collision involved a male cyclist in his 50s and a car. The cyclist received serious injuries and was taken to Tallaght Hospital where he was pronounced dead last night as a result of injuries sustained in this collision.”

The press office said separately that the man died at Beaumont Hospital last night.

“Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examined the scene. The local Coroner has been notified.”

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Rathfarnham Garda Station 01 666 6500, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”

  1. Named as “latest cycling death” by the Indo as Padraic Carney, the principal of St Louis primary school in Rathmines.

Agreed. It’s very annoying to see this language being used. No doubt he saw the car and pedaled furiously so that he could slam into it at such speed that he could kill himself.

In reality there’s almost zero chance that he cycled into the car with enough force to kill himself. On the other hand, it’s very likely that the car hit him and killed him. Another case of the driver not looking and not seeing the person on the bike. However, watch as nothing of any consequence happens to the driver for killing this person.

  3. It’s been changed since to read “when he was in collision with a car at a junction”. I suppose they feel that is better?
