News in brief: Reboot of Dublin’s Beta Projects welcomed

A plan to reboot the DCC Beta Projects — a system where Dublin City Council tried and tested on-street innovations, but which was suspended last year due to resource issues — was welcomed last week by Councillor Claire Byrne.

Cllr Byrne (Green Party) said: “The Beta Project is a great resource for Dublin. Its exploration approach allows for new ways of making cost effective decisions about how the city functions and also encourages citizen engagement, which we need more of in the city.

She added: “After submitting a series of council questions and motions, and finally a meeting with the city CEO, I am delighted that he has seen the real value of Beta Projects and has not only agreed to restart the project, but to allocate full time staff to it. The Beta Projects was originally funded as part of City Architects and helped to keep important issues moving in times when there was little funding available. We have already seen how Beta Projects has animated the City with the traffic signalling box designs and attractive bike parking.”

“This is really great news for the City and its citizens. I look forward to working with the Beta Projects team on delivering creative, cost effective and innovative solutions to the city’s challenges,” said Byrne.
