A 60-year-old woman was killed at lunchtime today in a collision between the bicycle she was cycling and a tractor being driven in the same direction as her on the N28 between Carrigaline and Ringaskiddy.
The collision happened on the N28 between the Shannon Park roundabout at the northend of Carrigaline and the village of Shanbally, which is just west of Ringaskiddy.
James Molloy of the Garda press office said: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision involving a tractor and a female cyclist on the N28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road which occurred on the 13th September 2017 at approximately 1.00pm.”
“A cyclist in her 60s suffered serious injuries when she was involved in a collision with a tractor. The driver of the tractor was uninjured. The body of the woman has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place,” he said.
According to a tweet by Red FM traffic diversions have now been lifted. Gardaí had said that forensic collision investigators were at the scene.
RTE.ie reports that both the tractor and bicycle were both travelling towards Ringaskiddy.

Cork City councillor John Buttimer said: “Very saddened to learn of the death of a cyclist in Cork this afternoon.”

So sad for her family. But these impacts are wholly avoidable with a Vision-Zero approach. We know from helmet-cam video footage what is really going on out on our roads with dangerous overtaking manoeuvres all far too common and going undetected and unpunished.
We know that people who cycle generally do not throw themselves at vehicles with a death wish.
Riders out on horses are accorded more respect on our roads than people who ride bicycles.
