Campaigners photograph more illegal parking in a week than Gardai ticket in a year

I Bike Dublin — campaigners focused on keeping cycle lanes clear of motorist’s vehicles — said today that members of the public photographed more vehicles illegally parked in a week than the Gardai fined in a full year.

The #freethecyclelanes hashtag was used on Twitter to crowdsource the images.

The group Tweeted: “So we took @GardaTraffic’s yearly performance for issuing fines for parking illegally in cycling lanes over a full year (in the full country) and our community worked to beat that figure in one week on their daily commutes. Here are the provisional results:”

According to some of the nearly 80 people involved taking the photographs, they only took photos of cars blocking cycle lanes when they were not in a hurry to work. Another said that he stopped half way through the week and a third said he only took one photo.

...That's the end of the article. Keep scrolling if you want to the comments, but IrishCycle.com *NEEDS* readers like you to keep it that way. It only requires a small percentage of readers to give a bit each month or every year to keep IrishCycle.com's journalism open to all. Thank you.

  1. And it’s not just cycle lanes. A project in last year’s Young Scientist found more people speeding through the Cork village of Belgooly in a week than the Gardaí found in the entire state in a year – goo.gl/ooQbpi

  2. It’s obvious to anyone that pays even a tiny bit of notice that motorists blocking cycle lanes is endemic. It is very frequent that I have to pull out in to the main flow of traffic to go around these badly parked cars and this increases my own risk and may slow down other motorists. Cars parked up on off road cycle tracks are even worse because I can’t just merge out, I have to go on to the pedestrian area, or a grass border or drop down a kerb in to traffic. This is a significant part of the reason I don’t like going up on to those cycle tracks.

However, adding the daily, monthly and annual numbers together in to a stacked column is terrible data presentation and they should fix this.
