Teenager in ICU after hit and run driver smashes bicycle

A 14-year-old child was put in intensive care last night after a hit and run driver smashed into the teenager’s bicycle on the Cheeverstown Road in Tallaght.

Gardai confirmed this afternoon that the teenager is in a serious condition in hospital.

In an update before 5pm, Gardai said the car involved is described as a black saloon car, possibly a VW Passat or a Saab.

The road the collision happened on is between the Fettercairn and Rossfield estates.

A relative posted a photograph on Facebook showing the teenager’s bicycle in bits, strung along the road.

In a widely shared post, Ciara O Reilly said: “This is what’s left of my nephews bike after he was involved in a hit and run tonight on the road between Fettercairn and rossfield he is now in the ICU in a really bad way please if anyone knows anything at all let us or the garda know he is only 14 and could of been killed.”

A statement from the Garda press office said: “Gardaí are investigating a serious road traffic collision that occurred on Sunday evening, 4th February, 2018 at approximately 8.50p.m. on Cheeverstown Road, Tallaght.”

It added: “A 14-year-old male pedal cyclist was struck by a car, which failed to remain at the scene. The youth was taken to Crumlin Children’s Hospital where he is in a serious condition. Investigations are ongoing.”

The road has segregated cycle tracks, but the segregation is light and non-continuous, and collision appears to have happened on an non-segregated section where the cycle lane is marked with a broken white line.

Pedestrian barriers also separate the cycle lane from the roadway with the cycle lane.

Gardai have asked that anybody who may have witnesses this collision or who may have information to contact Tallaght Garda Station on 01- 666 6000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

  1. very sad to hear this. Idea of leaving the scene is really awful on top of everything else. I hope the young man makes full recovery. The lack of real deterants in Ireland is deeply disturbing. Those injured or killed cycling seem to be treated by our law and public quite casually.

  2. I hope we find out if that metal barrier at the side of the road compound the injuries? Was the victim crushed or whacked against the barrier?

What the fuck is the purpose of those barriers anyway? All they do is encourage people in cars to drive in an even more reckless manner.

  3. Jesus, poor kid. On a bike lane too; shows how useless they can be against a reckless driver if all they are is a bit of paint on a road. Agreed on the railing, it is obviously there to protect pedestrians; cyclist safety was not taken into account. Maybe it should not be there, but if it should be anywhere it should be between the cycle lane and road. Hope they catch the piece of shit that did this and throw the book at him.
