Consultation to be held for two Kerry greenways

Kerry County Council is to hold public consultation days for the proposed North Kerry Greenway and the Tralee to Fenit Greenway.

Tralee to Fenit Greenway consultation day is to take place at the Fenit Parish Centre on Wednesday May 23 between 11am and 8pm, while the North Kerry Greenway day is to take place at the Listowel Arms Hotel on Thursday May 24 between 11am and 8pm.

The North Kerry Greenway day includes the Great Southern Trail between Listowel to the Kerry and Limerick boundary. The Limerick side of the Great Southern Trail has been developed and the image above shows the route ending at the Kerry border.

The council said that maps of the routes of respective proposed greenways will be on display for inspection throughout the respective days and that council officials will be available to discuss aspects of the project on a one-to-one basis with landowners and interested parties during the hours specified.

In February, the Kerry Cycling Campaign said on Twitter: “Great to hear that Kerry County Council has begun contacting residents and owners of land adjoining the former North Kerry Railway between Tralee and Listowel. 30 years since it was first proposed, Ireland’s first planned greenway takes a step in the right direction!”

Meanwhile, Radio Kerry recently reported that Kerry County Council has applied for a pre-application consultation with An Bord Pleanala on the 32-kilometre South Kerry Greenway. The route is to run between Glenbeigh and Renard via Caherciveen. The planned use of Compulsory Purchase Orders, while controversial, is being used because there is the potential that a small number of landowners could block the route.
