News in brief: Byelaws to tackle anti-social behaviour on Mullingar to Athlone Greenway

Bylaws are to be put in place by Westmeath County Council to address anti-social behaviour on the Old Rail Trail Greenway between Mullingar and Athlone.

The Westmeath Examiner reported that there have been complaints about dog faeces, horse manure, dogs loose on the greenway, hunt groups and others using horses on the walking and cycling route. There was also complaints about the speed at which some cyclists travel, although council officials said they would not be trying to impose a speed limit on the greenway.

According to the Westmeath Examiner, the council’s director of services, Barry Kehoe, said: “It’s just good to have this in the background. Hopefully we won’t have to prosecute people very often, but if we need to we certainly will.”

The greenway is part of the planned Dublin to Galway Greenway — progress in planning and construction is on-going between Dublin and Athlone, while there has been no recent update on the route west of the River Shannon.

  1. Wouldn’t it be great if officialdom tackled all the anti-social behavior on normal streets: cars parked on pavements, cars speeding, people driving using mobile phones. etc etc etc

  2. In fairness, the speed issue is a fair one. I’ve heard (before I read this article) that the Mullingar green way was being used by sports cyclists to do speed trails. Now, that’s not a problem at quiet times…. but that’s also not what folk think they’re getting when they’re getting a greenway. Some nauanced things to think about…
