Man in his 60s injured after bus/bicycle collision on Dublin’s quays

A man who was cycling a bicycle at the junction of Dublin’s Eden Quay and Butt Bridge sustained a serious leg injury in a collision with a coach driver at rush hour yesterday.

“At approximately 5.50pm gardaí attended the scene of a collision involving a bus and cyclist at Butt Bridge, Dublin 1. The cyclist, a man in his 60s, was taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital for treatment,” said Celine Ross at the Garda press office.

She said: “It is understood he sustained a serious leg injury. The driver of the bus was unharmed.”

“The investigation is ongoing. Gardaí in Store Street have asked for witnesses to contact them on 01 6668000.”

  1. In what Universe was the driver of a 8 ton bus ever even remotely likely to be harmed in any way in a collision with a 15kg bicycle? Why is this pointless piece of information even mentioned? It promotes a false equivalence of the vulnerability of different road users.

  2. That’s a left turn for busses only, all other cars vehicles must go straight. all the arrows painted on the road point straight.
    I reckon that the road marking is to largely to blame for the accident, I reckon that the cyclist was not expecting any vehicle to turn. and the driver wasn’t paying attention.

    if you drive a vehicle with known blind spots, you simply need to take extra precaution in turning. (why thru don’t have mandatory fish eye lenses cameras installed is beyond me. for less than a couple of hundred euro all blind spots can be eliminated)

  3. The Irish Road Haulers Association tells us that being able to see their blind spots would be too distracting for the drivers. Seriously.
