Liffey Cycle Route misses August deadline, progress due soon says NTA

An announcement on the long-awaited Liffey Cycle Route is to be made within weeks, the National Transport Authority said this evening, after confirming another delay to the project.

A National Transport Authority spokesman said: “Work on proposals is at an advanced stage and we hope to be in a position to make an announcement in the coming weeks.”

Since the NTA took over the planning of the project last September, this is third deadline to be missed.

Traffic counts have found that bicycle users now outnumber car users on the quays in rush hour, but the project for a segregated route along Dublin’s quays has struggled to get off the ground since initial work started on it in 2011.

Consultants were hired to review all option for the route and the authority previously said that it wants to be as thorough as it can possibly be before a definitive decision is made.

Earlier today the Dublin Cycling Campaigns said on Twitter: “The Liffey Cycle Route project began in 2011.

Last Sept the National Transport Authority took the project back from @DubCityCouncil and said it would conduct a design review, which it said would take 4 months. One year later and we’re still getting excuses like this.”
