Dublin Cycling Campaign to spin out Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown branch

— DLR Cycling is to have its first meeting in October.

A Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown area branch of the Dublin Cycling Campaign is to be trialed under the name DLR Cycling.

Area-branches of cycling campaigns are the normal in London, although, there’s likely only scope for two or three area branches at most in Dublin.

“The purpose of a specific DLR Cycling Campaign is to increase the engagement in this area of city between cycling citizens and the councillors and officials of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council. We are hoping that we can create a constructive and relevant platform for local DLR cycling,” said Keith Byrne, who is heading the initiative.

“Dublin is rather large after all and we need to ensure all areas are covered well. I think it will be successful at improving the advocacy relationship with DLR. We have made some progress in recent years, but we feel it’s gone a bit stagnant and we need to step it up a gear and achieve better involvement between the cycling community and the council,” he said.

Byrne added: “It’s about making it relevant at a local level and ensuring that it enables the engagement with a structured channel into the many cohorts of the council.”

The first meeting of the group is to take place at the Dún Laoghaire LexIcon at 6.30pm on Wednesday October 10 — there’s limited space, so, people wanting to attend are asked to contact DLR Cycling via direct message on Twitter. There will be an email address set up soon but those who are not on Twitter can email info@dublincycling.com with the subject line ‘DLR Cycling meeting’.
