Seven years of pre-planning — the planning stage of a project before a firm plan is developed — is to be marked with birthday cake at the monthly family-friendly Liffey Cycle Route protest tomorrow.
The Dublin Cycling Campaign’s monthly group cycle along Dublin’s quays is set to kick off at 11.00am tomorrow (Sunday) from Grand Canal Square in the Docklands.
As IrishCycle.com reported last month, substantial progress on the project is expected to be made before Christmas.
“Please join us once again for our monthly cycle along Dublin’s Quays as we continue to highlight the lack of progress on the Liffey Cycle Route. This family-friendly group cycle highlights the lack of progress on the Liffey Cycle Route – a proposed safe cycleway along the Liffey Quays from the Phoenix Park to the Point Village,” the campaign said on its website.
“November 2018 marks the 7th anniversary of the first public announcement of the Liffey Cycle Route, way back in 2011. At the time Dublin City Council predicted that the project would be completed by 2017. As things stand, a final design for the route has yet to be chosen.”
The campaign added: “To mark the 7th anniversary of the announcement we’re going to host a 7th Birthday Party in Grand Canal Dock, complete with a giant birthday cake – so arrive hungry!”

Hey where was the birthday cake,I didn’t get any and I arrived hungry as recommended.
The cake was delayed due to objections to frosting by Dublin Town who insisted that icing was the only sustainable topping for city centre traders. Brown Thomas lodged a complaint that the cake was being brought by someone on a bike on the basis that would only be possible using some sort of black magic and they demanded that a truck, or at least some cars, be used instead. Finian McGrath and Mannix Flynn were both incoherent with rage and were difficult to make out…the only decipherable thing was Flynn saying that cake is the most dangerous thing on the roads and McGrath relating a story about how every morning he is nearly killed by cakes flying along with reckless disregard.
The cake is now scheduled to be delivered mid 2025, or early 2026. 2030 at the latest. Unless it never gets delivered. Be aware that the cake may actually end up being a shit sandwich but we’ll still take credit for delivering it on time (whatever time we finally decide on).
