Councillors welcome new plan for College Green Plaza

— Changes to “ensure safety” to be made in advance of a new planning application.

Dublin City Council is set to lodge a new planning application for a College Green Plaza next year.

It follows the release over the weekend of a poll from the an Amarách Research Panel of 1,000 adults for the TheJournal.ie and Claire Byrne Live showing that 60% of people support the plaza and just 22% opposed to the idea.

City councillors from a number of parties tonight welcomed the news after officials told the monthly meeting of Dublin City Council that the council would re-apply for permission for the plaza.

Cllr Jane Horgan Jones (Labour) said: “Dublin City Council confirm they will not lodge any judicial review proceedings regarding An Bord Pleanala decision to refuse permission for College Green Plaza. Dublin City Council will make changes in the College Green area to ensure safety in advance of a new application to An Bord Pleanala in 2019.”

Cllr Frank Kennedy (FF) said: “Delighted to hear Dublin City Council meeting this evening that a new application for the #CollegeGreen plaza will be made in 2019.”

Cllr Naoise O’Muirí (FG) said: “Dublin City Council not going to take a judicial review of An Bord Pleanala’s decision re College Green but will instead prepare a revised application and go again – a good decision in the round.”

Cllr Patrick Costello (Green Party) said: “The city council have just been told a new planning application for the College Green Plaza will be lodged in the new year. No further details really, it was a surprise verbal report, have nothing in writing yet! Nice surprise though.”

  1. I have repeatedly answered that. I sought a one month deferral to enable some answers regarding a key road. Without those the consultation was doomed. I am a cyclist.

  2. @Dermot — sorry the article should have noted that comments from all four councillors were taken from Twitter.

After spotting one and then I used a simple Twitter search to find mentions of College Green.

Unfortunately, I’m often not in a position to watch the council meeting live.

  3. Any idea whether the “safety” issue relates to pedestrian/cyclist interaction on the plaza or to pedestrian safety on the quays footpaths (or both)?
