NEWS IN BRIEF: Councillors on Cork County Council today unanimously agreed on planning permission for the planned Midleton to Youghal Greenway.
The council is now seeking part of the funding from the Government’s National greenway fund. The 24km greenway would cost over €19 million to build and the council is expected to fund at least 25% of that.
Cork Cycling Campaign welcomed it as “Good news for Greenway users in East Cork!”
There had been public debate about re-opening the former Midleton to Youghal railway instead of developing the greenway, but Irish Rail has said it has no plans to open the route.
Green Party leader Eamon Ryan TD and local representatives, Liam Quaide and Dan Boyle, had looked for the railway and greenway to be build side-by-side.
Today, the Evening Echo reported that Midleton-based Fine Gael Councillor Susan said: “To reopen the track would cost between €150-170m and there is a population in Youghal of 7,000.”
