€17.5 funding for new section of S2S Dublin Bay greenway

€17.5 million in funding has been allocated for a section of the Dublin Bay greenway between Booterstown and Dún Laoghaire, according to the lord mayor of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

Cllr Ossian Smyth (Green Party) said: “Happy to announce that €17.5m has been allocated by the NTA for the S2S coastal greenway from Booterstown to Dún Laoghaire. Design and planning is underway.”

The section between Booterstown to Dún Laoghaire is around 5km.

The S2S or Sutton to Sandycove greenway is a long-delayed walking and cycling route planned along Dublin Bay. While the route near the city has been beset by problems, it has been supersede in regional planning by what is termed as the East Coast Trail from Arklow to Drogheda.

A large section of the route is now usable on the north side between Fairview and Sutton but little progress has happened on the south side in years.

When asked by a member of the public on Twitter would it be routed along the coast, Cllr Smyth said: “Mostly – the only section in doubt is from Blackrock to Merrion Gates and this is still being worked on.”

He added: “After so many years of delay, I can’t blame anyone for feeling sceptical. There are still some significant non-financial hurdles. There are also many people working on solutions.”

UPDATE: Reaction:

The news was welcomed by s2s.ie campaigner, Clara Clark, who commented below: “For the past 20 years (yes, 20 years!) I have been involved in seeking the development of the S2S, a 22 km off-road pedestrian and cycleway around Dublin Bay from Sutton to Sandycove (Sutton 2 Sandycove). Can I now cheer (with fingers and toes still crossed) at this announcement that the NTA has allocated funding to develop the Dun Laoghaire section? This off-road route would open up Dublin to the sea and the bay area, creating wonderful amenities for everyone to enjoy. Please let it be true!

It was also welcomed by the DLR branch of the Dublin Cycling Campaign, which said: “Great to see this development that will hopefully make cycling the coastal route safe, convenient and enjoyable for locals and visitors alike. We will continue to advocate for more improvements to cycling infrastructure and safer enforcement across the county.”

  2. booterstown to Dun Laoighre is actually an ok a route at the moment, the only bad spot is the path along the dart station.

what’s needed badly is sandymount sea front, there’s a path right beside the strand and another one beside the road that is not used and could easily be converted to a 2 way cycle path

  3. This is not enough!!
They have been talking about this since I’m about 8 years old, I have lived and commuted for most of my working life at this stage and it’s still not done! Imagine the difference it would make if I could commute to work along this route then, up the Liffey to the central city.
The only way to get people Out of their car is to make the alternatives more appealing. Instead the authorities will work the other way and just make taking the car unbearable.
Imagine the number of people that would use this route every weekday. Remember this at the next county council election folks!
