Contra-flow cycle lane to be built between Westland Row and the quays

UPDATE: Public consultation for this project is online and ends this Monday, May 6.

A long-awaited contra-flow cycle route on Lombard Street East, linking the junction of Pearse Street and Westland Row to the quays is set to be built.

The project will include 2 metre wide one-way segregated cycle lane heading south-north from the junction of Pearse Street to City Quay.

Welcoming the development, Cllr Patrick Costello (Greens) said “It’s great to see this happen finally. There is need for safer infrastructure like this across the city, and while it has been a stated aim of the development plan to introduce more it has still been a slow process with few delivered.”

According to Dublin City Council the project includes the removal of car parking along the west side of Lombard Street East; modification to the existing traffic island at Pearse Street / Westland Row; and new protected intersections for cyclists.

The protective islands at the junction with Townsend Street are unusual-looking:

The council said that the project will also include improved pedestrian crossing facilities.

The Environment and Transportation Department of the council said they are planning to tender for the Works next Friday April 12.

  1. This is overall very positive but I think there’s an issue with the locations of the concrete islands in the southbound cycle tracks. The design speed for cycles looks unrealistically slow. The shared footpath at the junction with the quays is also disappointing.

  2. Parking protection would be a simple improvement for the cycle lane going south on Lombard st.

The statement “Existing Loading bay to remain” shows the coincil are planning to have hgvs crossing the cycle track
