Cycle lane in Ranelagh narrowed after resurfacing

NEWS IN BREIF: A cycle Lane has been left narrowed beside car parking on the Ranelagh Road in Dublin after resurfacing works.

The cycle lanes in the street are due to be upgraded as part of the Clonskeagh cycle route, between Clonskeagh and the city centre. This project was delayed due to lack of resources linked with Luas Cross City works, but IrishCycle.com understands planning work on the route is starting again.

...I'm sorry to disrupt you while you're reading this article, but without messages like this, IrishCycle.com's reader-funded journalism won't survive. With nearly 1/2 million views and 300k readers so-far this year, it's not just people who are dedicated to cycling that this website reaches. However, the number of subscribers is around 0.6% of readers. While having a large gap between readers/subscribers is standard for non-paywall reader-supported journalism, IrishCycle's journalism needs more support. Don't delay, support monthly or yearly today. Now, back to the article...

In the meanwhile, the resurfacing works has made the existing non-segregated cycle lane worse.

“It’s 2019 and Dublin City Council are narrowing their cycle lanes. Especially ones in the doorzone,” said Oisin O’Connor, a campaigner with the Dublin Cycling Campaign. He added: “If this gets your goat, raise the issue on dublincity.ie/trafficservice …this is ridiculously bad and now a waste of council’s money with a repaint.”

...That's the end of the article. Keep scrolling if you want to the comments, but IrishCycle.com *NEEDS* readers like you to keep it that way. It only requires a small percentage of readers to give a bit each month or every year to keep IrishCycle.com's journalism open to all. Thank you.

  1. A basic tenet of cycle lanes is that they indicate to the cyclist a safe postion to take up on the roadway. This cycle lane design fails in this regard and is a failure of duty of care on behalf of the Council. Also it looks like they have not put back the red surfacing thus degrading the level of service of the cycle track. What was the hosting of Velo-City 2019 by Dublin City Council all about then? So it’s business as usual: take a cycling facility that was was “average” and instead of improving it (e.g. by introducing physical segregation, elimiating on-street parking, etc.), degrade it. It is a billboard that says “We Dont Care. You Don’t Matter. Car is King”.

  2. The driver of the car had to break the law to get the car there, driving in a mandatory cycle lane.
S.I. No. 332/2012 – Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2012.

(5)(a) A mechanically propelled vehicle, other than a mechanically propelled wheelchair, shall not be driven along or across a cycle track on the right hand edge of which traffic sign number RRM 022 has been provided, save for the purposes of access to or egress from a place adjacent to the cycle track or from a roadway to such a place.

they haven’t left the roadway, and so …
