Boy airlifted to hospital after collision with motorist in Limerick

A child, who was out cycling, was airlifted to hospital with suspected head and chest injuries after a collision with a person driving a car yesterday afternoon, according to reports.

The Limerick Leader newspaper reported that the collision happened on Tuesday between the villages of Kilfinane and Garryspillane on the L1511 in Co Limerick.

Forensic crash investigators examined the scene and Gardai are now asking that any witnesses contact them on 061 382940.

Tonight, an executive officer at the Garda press office said: “Gardaí attended the scene of a road traffic collision which occurred in the Kilmallock area, Co Limerick yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 21st April 2020.”

The spokesperson said: “Shortly before 1pm, a car collided with a male youth who was riding a bicycle. Emergency services also attended the scene. The youth was taken to Cork University Hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.”

Asked the age of the injured party, the spokesperson said that An Garda Síochána does not disclose the personal details of youths. The Limerick Leader has the boy’s age reported as 9-years-old, while TheJournal.ie reported his age as 11-years-old.

Reacting to the news, the Limerick Cycling Campaign said: “We hope this young boy makes a full recovery. Our thoughts are with him.”
