A man in his 60s was killed in a fatal road traffic collision involving the man on his bicycle and a motorist driving a car this morning after 8am in Co Kerry.

A press release issued a short time ago, Emma Farrelly at the Garda press office said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and a pedal cyclist that occurred at approximately 8.20am this morning, Monday 27th April 2020. The incident occurred on the N22 Tralee-Killarney road in Rockfield, Killarney, Co. Kerry.”

She said: “The pedal cyclist, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body is due to be moved to the mortuary at University Hospital Kerry where a post-mortem will be conducted. The Coroner has been notified.”

“The services of Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested at the scene. The road is currently closed and motorists are advised to take alternative routes where possible. Local diversions are in place,” said Farrelly.

She added: “Gardaí in Killarney are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward and for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time to make it available to Gardaí.”

Gardai are asking that anyone with information should contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Responding to the news, the Kerry Cycling Campaign said: “Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.” Which translates as: “May his gentle soul be on Gods right hand”.

  1. Yet another person dies while cycling on Irish roads. When is an Irish government going to take dramatic action to change the culture of the car for one that respects all road users.

My condolences to the family and friends of the bereaved.
