Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown may follow city council with expanded 30km/h limits

Councillors on Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are to look at reviewing speed limits after the neighbouring Dublin City Council has started the process at reducing many main roads and streets to 30km/h.

Cllr Barry Saul (FG) said: “Delighted to get a commitment today at group leaders meeting to commence a review of increasing the number of 30 km speed limits throughout the county.”

Meanwhile, the Dublin City Council’s transport committee yesterday agreed to put its plan to a vote of the full city council. The vote will take place at the monthly city council meeting on Monday and, if approved, the next stage will be public consultation.

The move by the city council has annoyed the AA, a motoring group which has a long history of opposing speed limit changes. The AA was originally set up to fight against speed limit laws and, in 2016 the Irish AA, made a submission to increase speed limits in Dublin city centre and outside school on some roads.

RTE Radio One reported in news bulletins yesterday said that the AA claimed speed limits had nothing to do with COVID-19. However, reducing speed limits to aid social distancing — such as people stepping off narrow footpaths — and to help safety switch to walking and cycling has been the response of some cities internationally.

  1. Wonder when Fingal will start some widescale 30 zones. Theres a 30 zone in my estate, as a “pilot” since about 2015, but none in any other estate in the town, and there’s other roads nearby which should have a 30 limit,
