Sandymount cycle route postponed due to opposition despite public consultation showing 2:1 in support

UPDATE: Dublin City Council has said the following report based on RTE is not accurate and that the trial of a Sandymount cycle path is not postponed to 2021.

Dublin City Council has postponed its plan to trial a two way cycle path on Strand Road in Sandymount because of local opposition to making the road one-way, according to RTE.

Dublin City Council officials made the move to delay the trial project while the public consultation remains open until the end of the day. Around 2,500 submissions had been made to date.

Cllr Dermot Lacey (Labour) tweeted in response: “Deferred to allow real engagement with lots of groups including Cycling Campaigns.” Cllr Lacey was among local councillors who previously voted against the South Dublin Quietway around similar fears about traffic disruption.

RTE are also reporting that “It is understood that overall the submissions were running 2:1 in support” of the cycle path.

  1. Ok time for some direct action by people who value safe, sensible, socially and environmentally beneficial transport like cycling and walking. The backwards step of opening the pheonix park gates now this. The Dutch change happened following robust direct action. For exemple it would be such a shame if someone were to close those gates around the pheonix park or if cyclists and pedestrians were to move really slowly on masse on roads around the city.
