Months later, Gardaí yet to view video of motorist knocking man off his bicycle

A man who was knock off his bicycle by a motorist who entered a bus lane to skip by traffic congestion in Dublin in August has said that Gardai have yet to even view a video provided to them.

Rory Halpin, reported a motorist who tried to skim passed him and ended up knocking him off his bicycle on the Phibsborough Road on August 7th.

Halpin told IrishCycle.com that he provided a written statement and a link to video footage of the incident. He said that information provided by his data storage provider indicates the video has not been watched via the link provided to the Gardai.

The video provided by Halpin shows the driver of an SUV enter the bus lane around arched entrance to the Broadstone bus depot, where the bus lane is wider than usual.

The motorist then attempted to overtake but ends up knocking Halpin down at the entrance to Phibsborough fire station, at a point where the bus lane is narrower.

Halpin said that that since he reported the issue he hasn’t seen or heard of any sign of action by the Gardai. He says he has phoned the Garda station but that they will not provide him with a Pulse number and keep telling him he’ll be phoned back, but nobody has called him back. He feels that nothing is being done.

The Gardai press office confirmed that a collision was reported to them matching the details, but did not answer questions on the status of the case or why the video link provided was not accessed.

A spokesperson at the Garda press office said: “An Garda Síochána cannot comment on matters concerning any named individual(s)”

  1. that is a major issue and hence why a lot of not only cycling incidents but also pedestrian incidents get unreported as the gardai are just not bothered unfortunatly

  2. From experience, Gardai are not able to view external sites. Any I’ve dealt with have requested a compact video to be emailed or have taken a video of my video on their phone. (One also issued a charge based on my description and never asked to view the video.)

It’s immensely discouraging that the whoever has been assigned this case (if anyone) hasn’t bothered to get in contact.
