DublinBikes users can now unlock bicycles using their phones

Users of DublinBikes can now unlock bicycles using their Android phones and iPhones…. it seems even from the comfort of their own home.

The new app-based unlocking feature is the first major user interface update to Dublin’s original on-street bicycle share system, which uses docking stations.

Unlike stationless bicycle unlocking systems which includes measures to make sure the phone unlocking the bicycle is beside it, the DublinBike feature seems to only rely on an internet connection. This means bicycles can be unlocked from anywhere with a connection.

At the start of December, Dublin City Council promised that “This is the first of a number of upcoming exciting developments planned over the course of the partnership which will modernise the scheme which has been a huge success in the city over the past 10 years.”

Sky’s NOW TV is also the new brand sponsor for DublinBikes, and the company’s logo can now be seen on DublinBikes around the city

  1. Is there any mention of a further expansion of the scheme? I was hoping a Green minister for Transport would spur that on again but so far I haven’t heard anything.

It’s such a successful scheme it seems a no brainer to keep growing it throughout the city.
