Royal Canal ‘Deep Sinking’ public consultation to restart after lockdown

Public consultation on one of the trickiest sections of the Royal Canal Greenway — including the ‘Deep Sinking’ — is likely to be re-started after the current COVID-19 lockdown is eased, Fingal County Council has said.

Over 100km of the Royal Canal Greenway has been completed between the River Shannon at Clondra and Lonford to Maynooth. The greenway is mostly incomplete in and around Dublin.

As IrishCycle.com reported recently, long-awaited construction work is due to happen in the Dublin City Council area this year. A section between the Docklands and North Strand Road was opened last July.

In Dublin 15, there was controversy in 2019 when a route between the canal and houses was proposed at the Deep Sinking section. But, now, a preferred route has not been established yet ahead of the new consultation, the council said.

In a statement to IrishCycle.com, a spokesperson for Fingal County Council said: “During the course of 2020 further site investigation works were carried out and utilised to further consider design elements which include constructability, engineering constraints, proximity to the adjacent rail line, and future DART expansion requirements. Stakeholder engagement is being undertaken on these elements and this process to establish the final preferred route option is not yet complete.”

“Given the level of Covid 19 restrictions there has not been significant opportunity for wider engagement with stakeholders, in person, over the last few months. Design work and preparation for a public consultation has been in progress nevertheless. It is intended to carry out this public consultation when Covid 19 restrictions ease,” the council said.

The council added: “Following on from this final non statutory consultation a planning application will be submitted either via a Part 8 or to An Bord Pleanála, depending on the final preferred route.”
