Man knocked off his bicycle in head-on hit-and-run crash with Audi driver in Kildare

Gardai are seeking for the driver of a silver Audi which left the scene of a head-on collision with a cyclist on Saturday to come forward.

“I hit the bonnet…I was angry that I’d been left in the middle of the road…my body is still swelling up,” Ray Morrissey told RTÉ Radio One’s Liveline show hosted by Joe Duffy in the last half hour.

Morrissey said he is on strong pain killers, has a broken wrist, and needed 28 stitches in his leg.

He said he was left on the ground and was shocked as he watched the motorist involved drive away in the distance. Other motorists came to his aid and kept him safe on the ground until an ambulance arrived.

On-air, Morrissey thanked the passer-by who stopped, the ambulance crew who he said were brilliant, and the Gardai who he said were quick to start to look for evidence.

The Garda press office said: “Gardaí attended the scene of a traffic collision that occurred at approximately 8:55m on 10th of April, 2021 in Knocknacree, Castledermot, Co Kildare.”

It added: “One cyclist, a male aged in his early fifties, was involved in this collision, alongside a single vehicle. The male cyclist suffered non-life threatening injuries as a result of this collision. Investigations are ongoing.”

The image shown above is of car suspected to be involved in the collision. It was captured by CCTV near the collision and tweeted out by RTÉ.
