WATCH: Hundreds protest calling for cycle paths in Galway and Dublin

Members of the public protested in large groups in Galway yesterday morning and in south Dublin on Sunday afternoon calling on councillors to provide cycle paths.

Despite heavy rain, the Galway Cycling Campaign said that it estimated that almost 300 people turned out to the Salthill protest cycle yesterday ahead of a Galway City Council meeting today which is to include a motion proposing the trial cycle path along Galway Bay in Salthill.

Galway Mayor, Cllr Colette Connolly (independent), is proposing the motion which calls on Galway City Council officials to “urgently seek to create a two way segregated cycle track on a temporary basis along the coastal side of Salthill promenade”. Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has promised to fund the project.

While in Dublin, another family-friendly protest was described online as possibly the largest protest in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown in modern history, ahead of a similar vote on Friday. As IrishCycle.com reported on Friday, councillors on Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are to vote if they want work recommenced on the council’s Active Schools Travel.

Work on the whole project was suspended after a group of councillors sought to block a planned cycle path on Deangrange Road which was planned as a trial which would make the road one-way for motorists.
