7 people killed while cycling on Irish roads in 2021

Seven people died while cycling on Irish roads in 2021, three fewer deaths than last year.

The Road Safety Authority said that the overall number of deaths of all road users in 2021, 133, is the lowest number of road traffic deaths in a year since recording began in 1959.

...I'm sorry to disrupt you while you're reading this article, but without messages like this, IrishCycle.com's reader-funded journalism won't survive. With nearly 1/2 million views and 300k readers so-far this year, it's not just people who are dedicated to cycling that this website reaches. However, the number of subscribers is around 0.6% of readers. While having a large gap between readers/subscribers is standard for non-paywall reader-supported journalism, IrishCycle's journalism needs more support. Don't delay, support monthly or yearly today. Now, back to the article...

The deaths involving people cycling is the second-lowest level on record, with the number previously declining to 5 in both 2010 and 2013.

The collisions last year included four collisions involving vehicles being driven by motorists, two single-vehicle collisions (involving only the person cycling), and one collision which IrishCycle.com could not establish the details of at the time of publication of this article.

This is a list of the fatal collisions involving people cycling in 2021:

  • May 3: A man in his 40s was killed in a collision with a motorist driving a bus between Kilshane Cross, Co Dublin and the back of Dublin Airport.
  • May 10: Aoibheann Duffy, an 11-year-old girl, died after a collision with a van driver 3km outside Abbeydorney, Tralee, Co Kerry.
  • July 24: 46-year-old Michael Burke died in a single-vehicle collision in Meadstown in Kildorrery, Co Cork.
  • August 29: A man in his 50s, John O’Malley, was killed in a collision with a motorist driving a car on the R345 near Corr Na Mona in Co Galway while O’Malley was taking part in a leisure cycle event.
  • November 2: A man in his 40s died in a single-vehicle collision when he hit a pole in Dublin.
  • December 27: An 80-year-old man was killed in a collision with a car driver on the Killeen Road in Ballyfermot, Dublin 10.
  • And one other collision with details to be confirmed.

...That's the end of the article. Keep scrolling if you want to the comments, but IrishCycle.com *NEEDS* readers like you to keep it that way. It only requires a small percentage of readers to give a bit each month or every year to keep IrishCycle.com's journalism open to all. Thank you.
