Galway City Council has this afternoon published two options for plans for a trial cycle path in Salthill, the popular seaside tourist area and suburb of the city.

Both options run from Grattan Road (around 1.3km from Spanish Arch) to the junction of Barna Road / Kingston Road (where the R336 meets with the R337) at Knocknacarra.

Both options also include a two-way cycle path alongside the Sailthill and Seapoint promenades. Both options also include a protected cycle lane in the westbound direction from Knocknacarra to near the Blackrock diving board.

The central difference between the two options is that Option 1 makes the road one-way between the Blackrock diving board to the main roundabout at Salthill village centre, while Option 2 allows for two-way motor traffic and buses on this section of the road.

While Option 1 makes the roadway on this section one-way for motorists and buses, this allows for the retention of more car parking between the diving board and the roundabout at the village.

Both options include keeping Seapoint Promenade two-way for motorists and removing the seaside parking. The two-way cycle path would take up the space of the current seaside parking, but the existing car parking on the far side of the road and car parks would remain in use as car parking.

The Galway Cycling Campain supports Option 2, which would retain two-way access for motorists and buses,
