Tier launches DCU inter-campus trial of its electric bicycle rental

Bicycle and scooter rental service Tier has launched a trial of its electric bicycle service between the five Dublin City University campuses.

It’s following other service providers to use the university campus as a starting point for its services in Dublin.

Tier said today that its scooters have already been used on the main DCU campus “for nine months, with no incidents reported despite thousands of trips”.

Daire Keogh, DCU President, said: “This e-bike initiative is a welcome expansion of DCU’s productive partnership with Tier. The University’s Climate Action Plan commits us to an ambitious target of net zero carbon emissions. Tier’s e-bikes will give our students and staff a new sustainable transport option to help us achieve that objective, while also increasing connectivity between DCU’s campuses.”

Fred Jones, regional general manager for Tier in Northern Europe, said: “We are proud to be able to bring our state-of-the-art e-bikes to Ireland and to demonstrate how useful they can be in connecting DCU’s campuses in an affordable, sustainable and fun way.”

He said that the electric bike trial is “an exciting opportunity for research on modal shift”.

Jones said that connecting the DCU campuses with e-scooters is something the company wants to do “when legislation allowed” but are glad to offer e-bikes for now.

The company said it was working alongside Luna, which was the first company to launch an trial in Ireland, also on DCU’s main campus.

He said: “We have been proud of the success of our e-scooter scheme so far alongside DCU and Luna, where we equipped a fleet of scooters with advanced computer vision technology. With this, Tier e-scooters are capable of understanding how many people were in their path, as well as preventing vehicles from being used on footpaths.”
