Works set to redesign section of S2S Dublin Bay cycle route at Clontarf Baths

NEWS IN BRIEF: Dublin City Council is to start construction this year on improving the S2S Dublin Bay cycle route at the Clontarf Baths, where the route is often blocked by illegally parked cars.

It’s unclear at this point if the design will follow the previously planned and much derided chicane on the cycle route where it crosses the car park entrance.

Cllr Naoise O’Muirí said: “In relation to conflict between cyclists and motorists at Clontarf Baths finally looking good for some progress. In fairness to DCC’s Active Travel Office they have been willing to get stuck into issues like these; look forward to seeing works getting started by year-end.”

O’Muirí had tabled a written question to council officials where he asked: “The Chief Executive to provide an update on DC work to regularise the entry/exit points at the Clontarf Baths with a view to making it safe for cyclists?”

In his question to officials, he said: “I know that this location is not in public charge but we have been seeking for some time to have it brought to standard. See attached a photo of a very recent example of vehicle parking down there which renders the location unsafe for those using the S2S cycleway.

The reply from council officials said: The Active Travel Programme Office are currently progressing with a 120m section of the Sutton to Sandycove (S2S) greenway to provide a safe, segregated cycle route along the Clontarf Road, specifically adjacent to Clontarf Baths. The proposed improvements include works to the car park to mitigate the cyclist-motorist conflict at the entry and exit points.”

The reply added: “The scheme is currently at detailed design stage with construction expected to commence in Q4 2022. The S2S also forms part of the East Coast Trail in the NTA’s 2013 Greater Dublin Area Cycle Network Plan.”
