One-day tickets for DublinBikes will be free on Thursday, September 22, to celebrate World Car Free Day, according to Dublin City Council.
The one-day ticket on DublinBikes, which usually costs €3.50, gives users free trips under 30 minutes. Charges apply after that.
The offer can be used via the DublinBikes app by entering the code NOWDBS when signing up for a one-day ticket.
The council said that since the one-day option was launched last May, 40,000 journeys have been made using it. DublinBikes previously only had a three-day ticket and annual subscription.
The DublinBikes system has had a few new features in recent years including an upgraded app which allows users to unlock bicycles at docking stations using their phones rather than the terminals. That feature was launched in March 2020 and now accounts for how 79% of all DublinBikes trips are started.
Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Caroline Conroy, said: “The Now dublinbikes 1 day free ticket allows Dubliners the opportunity to explore Dublin city by bike on World Car Free Day. Cycling and walking are great ways to get around the city, while keeping fit and reducing pollution. I would encourage people to avail of this great promotion and get out on their bikes, as active travel benefits both the individual and the city as a whole.”
The hybrid electric version of DublinBikes — where users carry around and charge their own battery pack — is back taking subscriptions. The batteries had been subject to a recall which affected DublinBikes and systems that use the same bikes in other EU cities. This is open to annual subscribers for an extra fee of €60 per year.
