Woman in her 70s knocked off her bicycle in collision involving a car driver in Co Sligo

A woman in her 70s was seriously injured today around midday in a collision involving a car driver at the Collooney roundabout on the N4 dual carriageway in Co Sligo.

A spokesperson at the Gardai Press Office said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision involving a bicycle and a car on the N4 at the Collooney roundabout in Sligo earlier today, Sunday, 2nd October 2022.”

“The collision occurred at around midday. The cyclist, a woman aged in her 70s, was later taken to Sligo University Hospital where she is continuing to receive treatment for serious injuries,” the spokesperson said.

In a press release issued just before 8pm on Sunday night Gardai said that a “technical examination of the scene is currently underway and the road remains closed at this time.“

The Press Office said that they are appealing to any witnesses of this incident or road users who may have video footage, to make this available to Gardaí at Sligo Garda Station on 071 915 7000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

  1. The government is largely responsible for incidents involving dangerous vehicles and bicycle users. Encouraging people to cycle is irresponsible if infrastructure remains extremely unsafe for, in particular, children, those new to using bicycles as a means of transport and those returning to their bicycles after many years.

Unless there is a major public advice campaign, firstly to warn those in charge of dangerous methods of transport, i.e. motorized vehicles, to be extremely careful when sharing the road with bicycle users and pedestrians and secondly a rapid roll out of state of the art/best practice bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure throughout the country, we will continue to read reports of deaths and injuries on our roads. Deaths and injuries caused by dangerous vehicles.

My thoughts are with the injured woman and those close to her.

  2. That roundabout doesn’t have any bicycle markings, which may or may not be a factor. Even if the marking is not well done, they can create awareness, warning people to look. Roundabouts with so many exits, particularly on national roads, can be places for some very fast moving cars. Most people driving on a roundabout would be extra careful if they see a cyclist, but ‘most people’ isn’t exactly a guarantee of safety. Some cars seem to take pride in barrelling through roundabouts, others be damned.

  3. We seem to have had a lot of impacts between drivers and bike users of late. I wish that the RSA and CSO would put the tally for injuries suffered by bike users into the public domain, on at least a quarterly basis. Compiled from hospital ED data, and not Garda filings.
Drivers don’t sem to understand that a roundabout is a junction and no overtaking of another road user should be taking place therein. That means hanging back if a bike rider is transiting it.
Maybe the driving instructors and testers don’t get this?
